Jesus is my Valentine!

You may smile at that or maybe not.

Indeed, Jesus has been my Valentine for the past 20 years!

Ever since I gave my heart to Him, I have called Him my Number One Valentine. You see, I have more than one Valentine. Keep on reading, I’ll explain in a moment.

Some Christians are against the whole concept of Valentine’s Day. They believe the origin of it is paganistic and that Christians shouldn’t celebrate it.

Pretty much every special day in the calendar is paganistic. Like Christmas day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. They are all man-made.

Some Christians don’t mind celebrating it, as long as the day is used to pay tribute to God’s agape love.

The way I look at it is what if your birthday, your partner’s or even your child’s birthday falls on that day? Wouldn’t you celebrate it?

I believe people over-complicate things.

I don’t mind celebrating Valentine’s Day. I love to receive a special gift when it isn’t my birthday or Christmas time!

Who doesn’t?!

I support Christian couples who celebrate their love for each other every day and use a special day like Valentine’s Day to show their affection and romance publicly toward each other.

What I don’t support is how the world has grossly commercialised erotic love and lustful behaviour for that day.

But they don’t know any different, and I don’t blame them.

The day wasn’t designed to worship God.

What Christians can do, though, is to turn it around and use the day to show God’s amazing love to people.

Some churches even organise events for this same reason, to show kindness to people.

What if you don’t have a Valentine?

There are two ways to address this.

One way is, not celebrate at all and spend the time entertaining yourself and doing what you love to do.

The other way is, offer to be part of the church or community activities during Valentines’ Day.

Many disadvantaged people would appreciate the attention and practical demonstration of God’s amazing love.

You can also do what I do.

Choose to be your children’s Valentine! Young children are curious about Valentine’s Day.

Take the time to explain both your love and God’s love for them, to prevent them from being attracted and influenced by the media on the subject.

Use the time to catch up with what’s going on in their lives. I’m sure getting a special gift from you, especially something individual to that child, will make their day! Emphasise that you honour God always.

That’s what I mean by I have more than one Valentine!

If you don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, use the opportunity to explain why and show them that the object of your affection is God. God is love!
